Welcome to BlankScreen. Throughout the first couple of seasons of blank screen, I’ve been asking a lot of questions like, where do you come up with your ideas? And what’s your favorite rule to live by? Well, I’ve already introduced the Golden Rule versus the platinum rule, which is treat others the way they want to be treated. I also have a rule that I live by that I thought of with my wife as we were remodeling our house. We decided, rather than blowing through stuff, just to get it done, we would do it once, and we would do it right.

Now that it’s out on the internet, let’s just call it the blank screen rule. I’ve heard some other ways of thinking; an entrepreneur came up with this concept of the MVP. What is the MVP? It’s a minimum viable product. The issue I have with the minimum viable product is that once it’s published, you can refine it, but you guarantee yourself that you’re going to be doing rework. Don’t get me wrong, 100% perfectionism is just as toxic as a minimum viable product. However, somewhere in the middle of that spectrum of minimum viable product, and perfectionism is the mantra that I choose to live by. Do it once, do it right.
